What is Skin Needling?

Skin Needling is a procedure conducted to treat various skin problems like scars, cellulite, wrinkles, and stretch marks and to improve the tone and texture of the skin. It is a less-invasive alternative to dermabrasion, laser treatments and other such methods that have been used so far to get desirable results.
When you get a cut or a burn, have you noticed how your skin regenerates the damaged part and new skin appears in its place very soon? This is the base of the method of skin needling. Small needle pricks are made in the to-be treated area thereby stimulating the skin in that area to remodel itself. But in this case the skin damage is controlled such that the skin modeling that occurs improves the texture of the skin, smoothening out the wrinkles and fine lines, clearing the scars or removing the stretch marks.
There is no cause to be worried about the treatment as you can even do it yourself. No qualified professional help is needed and with a little knowledge, care and caution, you can do the skin needling procedure yourself too if necessary. Now how is this done? It is simple. A specially designed device called derma roller is available which is ready to use. This roller has tiny needles all over it. You roll it over the area to get the desired result.
The advantage of derma roller is that it does not scrap off the skin; it just makes multiple needle pricks on it. And so the recovery is faster and it is also less painful because its less invasive unlike the other methods like dermabrasion or chemical peels which often penetrates deeper into the epidermis and affects a larger area. So it takes a long time to recover and there are chances of infection too. But in skin needling the recovery is quick and the chances of complications are also lower.
A point to be noted is that skin needling is less painful and for those who cannot bear even that much pain, a local anesthetic can be used to numb the area before undergoing the treatment. It’s easy to use a derma roller at home. There is no bleeding, bruising, or even swelling. It is a less expensive treatment too. While it is mainly used on the face, any part of the body can be treated. However it is recommended that pregnant ladies and those who are prone to skin infections easily should not undergo the treatment.
