Why an Infomercial Works

The benefits provided by infomercial programming to consumers are numerous. It can also be better for the consumer. Infomercials make for an easier shopping experience, are able to show the product in use, and often make the consumers feel like they are getting a good value.
Ease
One reason why is because consumers can easily buy the product they are interested in right away without having to go through the normal retail channels where prices are marked up. Additionally, if the product is new, it may not even have the retail distribution, making it very difficult for a consumer to purchase the product. Infomercials make it easy to have access to the products they want, by giving consumers a direct phone number and, now, a website address.
Visualized Benefits
Infomercials also work because consumers are able to clearly view the benefits of the product through demonstrations. Without providing information and giving demonstrations, it's simply a commercial. A great example is the Snuggie. If most consumers just saw a picture of the product on a box in the store, it would hard to conceptualize the benefits. But, through the infomercial, potential consumers are clearly able to visualize the benefits of, well, a blanket with sleeves.
Value
Often times, consumers feel like they're getting a "good deal" from infomercials. The typical messaging might be "Buy one, get one free" or "But wait! There's more!" or "Call within the next 30 minutes and get X for free!" This messaging, combined with the knowledge of purchasing direct from the manufacturer, helps the consumer to feel like the product is a good value and worth the purchase.
These factors, among others, all contribute to the effectiveness of an infomercial.
